Three of Jane Austen’s classic novels receive a murder mystery makeover inthis romantic andthrilling three-book series that’s perfect for fans ofThe Lady’s Guide to Petticoats andPiracyandStalking Jack the Ripper. InSense and Second-Degree Murder, aspiring scientist ElinorDashwood and her sister Marianne, a budding detective, work together to solve the mystery oftheir father’s murder.
When eighteen-year-old aspiring scientist Elinor Dashwood discovers her beloved father slumpedover the desk of his office study, she knows his death means dire straits for the Dashwood women. To make matters worse, an outdated will entails his estate—including Norland & Company, theprivate investigation firm where her younger sister Marianne worked as her father’s partner andprotégé—to their half-brother and his haughty wife, who waste notime in forcing the Dashwoodsout of their home and into a cramped apartment on London’s Barton Street. But before they go, the Dashwood sisters make a startling discovery that points to foul play, and thekiller might be family.Obviously, the girls mustinvestigate. It could be dangerous; it could ruin their reputations; and mostimportantly, it won’t bring back their father. But if the Dashwood sisters can combine their talentsand bring their father’s murderer to justice, it may bring them all some comfort—and it might evenlead to love.
The lives of the three Daswood sisters, Elinor, Marianne and Margaret, are completely destroyed when one morning Elinor finds her father, a famous private detective, who has died in her study. As if this pain wasn't enough, fate will soon have another surprise in store for the Daswood family. In fact, according to the will, all their possessions including their home will be inherited not by them but by stepbrother John and his hateful wife Fanny. Something is wrong . Elinor and her sisters will begin to suspect that perhaps something more could be hidden behind the death of their father. What if someone murdered him due to his investigation? It will be up to the three Daswood sisters to solve this mystery. But they will have to be very careful because the closer they get to the truth the more they could be in great danger.
I found this truly original and intriguing reading. In this novel, the author has decided to mix two of my favorite literary genres together, namely the Classics of English literature and the Thrillers, thus giving life to a story capable of entertaining me from the first to the last page, making me perennially on my toes.
To lead us to the heart of the narrative will be the two main protagonists, namely Elinor and Marianne Dashwood.
Elinor is the eldest daughter and the character I felt most in tune with. She is a very intelligent and bright, rational and mature girl. Unlike girls her age already looking for a husband, Elinor prefers to occupy her time reading books on Chemistry, her greatest passion, in the hope of being able to one day deepen his studies at the university. She will be the first to discover the death of her father, and from that moment, despite her great pain, she will decide to take over the reins of the family and to hide her true feelings from others, always showing herself strong and decisive.
Marianne is the second child, and unlike Elinor, she is very impulsive and direct. Endowed with a great investigative talent, Marianne would have liked so much to follow in her father's footsteps and support him in his business. She will first be convinced that perhaps the cause of her father's death is not natural and that therefore it could also be murder. Stubborn and determined, she tries in every way to get to the truth, though sometimes not thinking about the consequences of her actions.
Having two totally different characters Elinor and Marianne will often clash during the reading, but despite all for both the most important thing remains their family, and they would be willing to do anything to protect it.
I found the mystery behind the whole narrative really well constructed. I have to admit that halfway through the book I thought I figured out who the culprit was, but I was forced to change my mind. Towards the end, in fact, there will be some unexpected twists that will not only make all your hypotheses collapse but that I assure you will leave you completely speechless.
If you are looking for an exciting and suspenseful reading then "Sense and second degree murder" is just the book for you.
