From critically
acclaimed author Katrina Leno comes a tender love letter to books
andsummertime, with a touch of magic.
Anna Lucia Bell believes in luck: badluck. Bad luck
made her best friend stop talking to her. Bad luck caused her parents’ divorce.
Bad luck is forcing her mother, Miriam,to sell the family’s beloved bookstore.
And it is definitely bad luck that Anna seems to be the only person in the
world Miriam is unable to recommend a life-changing book. When Anna finds out
that she and her mom are spending two months in a New England seasidetown
called Rockport, she expects a summer plagued with bad luck too. But Rockport
has surprises in store for Anna, including a comet making its first appearance
in over twenty years and two new—but familiar—friends. In what will prove to be
the most important summer of herlife so far, Anna learns about love, herself,
and the magic that anordinary summer can bring.
Katrina Lenowas born on
the East Coast and currently lives in Los Angeles. She is the author of six critically
acclaimed novels: Horrid, You Must Not Miss, Summer of Salt, Everything All at
Once, TheLost & Found, and The Half Life of Molly Pierce. Her seventh
novel, Sometime in Summer, arrives June 28 2022. She thinks you are just
lovely.
The past year for Anna was a real disaster. For those like her who believe in bad luck, being 13 is not exactly the best, plus if you add to this the sudden separation of her parents and the end of her age-old friendship with Jennica, it seems clear that karma has really played a bad joke to Anna. After a long wait, however, her fourteenth birthday 's day has arrived, which should finally put an end to this series of catastrophes. Unfortunately for Anna, fate still has one last thrust in store for her. Her parents have in fact decided to sell their bookstore, which represents a sort of refuge for her, moreover her mother has decided that soon she and Anna will leave to spend the whole summer in Rockport, a small seaside town in Maine.
Once there, however, Anna
will discover that after fifty years a famous comet will pass right over this
town. What if this event was not a mere chance but a sign of destiny? Perhaps
this summer will give Anna a chance to get involved in getting luck back on her
side.
I found this reading
really enjoyable and super smooth. Although the narration is quite linear and
devoid of particular twists, I must say that this story still managed to
entertain me from the first to the last page.
I really liked the setting
chosen to be the backdrop for this Young Adult. I liked the way the author
described the picturesque town of Rockport, with its immense beaches and its
characteristic places, making it so vivid in my eyes that it gave me the
feeling of being right there.
The protagonist of this
book is Anna, a cute and funny girl. Like any teenager, she is facing a time of
great confusion and change. Anna has a unique and special relationship with
both of her parents, which has not been affected in the slightest by their
separation. The fact of continuing to see her parents always so close, however,
destabilizes Anna a bit, who in her heart so much hopes that they can change
their mind about divorce and therefore give themselves a second chance. When
she discovers that her beloved family bookstore will soon be up for sale, Anna
sees those few securities that were left in her gradually collapsing. In order
to cheer her up, her mother decides to move to her aunt's cottage in Rockport
for the whole summer, and unexpectedly a change of scenery will do Anna really
good. Over the course of this summer Anna will not only make new friends but
will also try to get out of her comfort zone and be a little more carefree and
adventurous as girls her age should be.
If you are looking for a
light read to take to the beach this is the book for you.
